Hieu Hua's Biography

The Freedom in a free country

Hieu Hua was born on October 10, 1963, in Ha Tien, South Viet Nam. In August 1978

he left Viet Nam and went to the Pulau Bidong refugee camp in Malaysia. He was eventually sponsored by a French family in Roberval, Quebec, Canada in February 1980.

In early 1981 he moved Calgary, Alberta for work in a windows and doors factory. When the economy declined in the province of Alberta in 1985, he decided to move to Toronto, Ontario. While he was there for work one of his friends, Van, taught him the basics of classical guitar.

In late 1986 Hieu and Van moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Hieu obtained his High School Diploma.  He also met Trung who helped him to further develop his guitar skills.

In 1988, he started dating Mitchelle Marinier and they both moved to Prince Rupert, BC. Hieu worked as a fisherman but the job was very challenging and he was ultimately unsuccessful.  One year later his first son, Matthew Marinier, was born.  After some financial problems, he broke up with Mitchelle and eventually moved back to Calgary in 1991.

In 1992 Hieu met Kiu Le and they were married in the summer of 1993. In September of that year, Hieu began to study at Southern Alberta Institution of Technology (SAIT) and was granted a Diploma as a Civil Engineering Technologist in April 1995.

For many years, Hieu had stopped playing guitar and learning music.  But his ambition for music returned in 2003 when he composed his first eight songs: one in English and seven in Vietnamese.

Hieu discontinued his music writing after his second son, Nam Victor Hua was born in October 2008.

A full decade later in midsummer 2019, Hieu decided to go back to songwriting and playing the guitar and he has composed two hundred more songs in Vietnamese. Today

he is continuing to pursue his songwriting skills.
